Making Healthier Choices At Restaurants

By YBQRPC | Nutrition & Health

The Restaurant Challenge

Restaurant food typically contains more oil, butter, and salt than home cooking. Portions are often huge. But you can make better choices without making every meal a battle.

Start by looking at the menu before you arrive. Many restaurants post nutrition information online. Plan what you'll order so you're not deciding when hungry.

Smart Ordering Strategies

Choose grilled over fried. Ask for sauces on the side so you control how much you use. Opt for steamed vegetables instead of fries. Choose whole grains when available. Don't be afraid to ask for modifications.

Drink water instead of soda or alcohol. Start with a salad or vegetable soup to fill up on fiber before the main course.

Portion Solutions

Restaurant portions are often two or three times what you need. Either share an entree, eat half and take the rest home, or accept you'll overeat and plan accordingly the next day.

Don't skip meals to save room - arriving too hungry leads to overordering. Eat a healthy snack before to take the edge off.
